Question

I loaned my trailer to a friend and it was damaged. Can their insurance cover it?

I loaned my tent trailer to a friend. It was not insured. While on her property, a tree broke in a storm and caused significant damage. Can her insurance cover it? What is the time limitation? this was in August 09.

    If you did not insure your trailer then there is, of course, no coverage for it.

    The only way the trailer would possibly be covered under your friend’s insurance is if:

    a) They were found liable for the damage and you sued them. This would likely not be the case here if a tree fell on the trailer causing damage.

    b) Your friend claimed under voluntary property damage under their homeowners policy which generally covers up to $1000 worth of damage. This coverage may not be applicable either but your friend can inquire with their own insurance company about this.
