Question

If I work from home, but never have clients at my home, is home insurance sufficient to cover me?

I work out of my home, and never have clients come to my house. I have a core group of clients for whom I do all of their written communications (press releases, website content and speeches mostly). Since I don’t sell a tangible product per se and don’t have clients coming to the house, isn’t my home insurance sufficient?

  1. Sean Graham says:

Your home insurance would only be sufficient to cover any of your personal risks. Even though you may not have anyone coming to your home, any of your business risks such as office equipment, liability, Errors and Omission, Libel and Slander, etc. would not be covered under your home insurance. For your type of business exposure I would recommend speaking with a broker to make sure your business is fully covered. At the very least you might want to check into obtaining a Commercial General Liability policy.
